Therapeutic Bodywork

Reiki
Reiki (pronounced as ‘ray-key’) is made up of two words – “rei” and “ki”. “Rei” can be interpreted as a higher form of intelligence, while “ki” denotes life force. Taken together, “reiki” is understood to be a kind of universal energy.

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered through the “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if high, we are more likely happy and healthy.

Reiki is arguably the best introduction to patients of the therapeutic effects of Integrative Medicine. Unlike some healing techniques where the energy flows from the healer to the individual, reiki energy flows from an unlimited source of light energy, into and through our physical, mental, emotional bodies to the person, place or thing that we direct it.

Reiki is a simple, natural safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

Reiki Principles
Just for today, I will let go of anger.
Just for today, I will let go of worry.
Today, I will count my many blessings.
Today, I will do my work honestly.
Today, I will be kind to every living creature.

CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral Therapy is a very gentle and profound bodywork modality that is beneficial for the whole body health and can treat a multitude of conditions.

Craniosacral therapy assesses, treats and prevents restrictions in the dura mater, (Latin words meaning ‘strong mother’) central nervous system, fascia, and thus the whole body. Through light touch, deep changes happen, creating balance throughout the physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and energetic spectrums of health.

The dura mater is the membrane surrounding the brain, spinal cord and central nervous system, which attaches to the cranium, vertebrea and sacrum, and is filled with craniosacral fluid. The craniosacral fluid creates a rhythm as it pulses through this craniosacral system which the therapist monitors and thereby enhances mobility. Through releasing restrictions in the dynamic fluid system at the body’s core your own innate healing potential is released to harmonize whole body health.

The aim of a craniosacral session is to help the membrane system, inside the vertebral column and cranium become more flexible. The craniosacral touch is a very light traction, in the order of 5 grams, maintained for several minutes, giving time for the membrane system to respond in its own way.

Craniosacral does not attempt spinal adjustment. The techniques used are very respectful of the body and the person, with the therapist observing the natural tendencies of the structure, allowing and inviting an exaggeration to the point of release and then helping the body to find a new balance.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release is a very effective form of integrative medicine, which includes, but is not limited to structural assessment and manual massage techniques that provide sustained pressure into myofascial restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion.

Derived from the Latin words “myo” meaning muscle, and “fascia” for band; myofascial release therapy releases tension from the fibrous bans of connecting tissue (fascia). Myofascial release therapy aims to free constrictions or blockages in the fascia therby alleviating problems with connective tissue scarring or injury.

Myofascial release therapy helps individuals with poor posture, physical injury, illness and emotional stress. By using myofascial release therapy, disruptions of the fascial network are freed and tension on bones, muscles, joints and nerves is relieved. Ultimately, myofascial release restores complete balance back to the body.

Myofascial release therapy utilizes gentle, kneading manipulation that softly stretches, softens, lengthens and realigns fascia. After careful observation of one’s posture, a myofascial release therapist will feel for stressed areas of the body. When restricted areas are found, the myofascial release therapist will gently stretch tissues found along the direction of the muscle fibers. This stretch is held for a couple of minutes until a softening or release is felt. These stretches are repeated until the tension is felt no more. A myofascial release session may last up to an hour and can be administered one to three times per week depending on a patient’s condition.

In addition, myofascial release therapy can be used to treat back pain; help persons suffering from frozen shoulder, fibromyalgia, headaches, chronic fatigue syndrome, menstrual problems, incontinence, tennis or golfer’s elbow, shin splints, sprains, rheumatois arthritis, muscle spasms, whiplash injuries and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Somatic Emotional Release
Utilizing polarity therapy and acupressure, Somatic Emotional Release is a hands-on therapy for facilitating emotional processing. This form of somatic therapy is for those who are having difficulty processing a specific issue or for those who find that they are repeating the same unhealthy emotional patterns. Somatic Emotional Release integrates emotional, physical, and intellectual experiences, allowing you to grow and move forward, toward a healthier more satisfying life. This is a body-oriented therapeutic process that helps rid the mind and body of residual effects of past trauma and associated negative responses. The therapist helps the client physically identify and expel the energy cyst through re-experiencing and resolving unpleasant incidents. These incidents are often referred to as a “healing crisis.”

Any person receiving bodywork can experience what is known in the industry as a “healing crisis”. Also known as the "Herxheimer Reaction", a healing crisis occurs when the body tries to eliminate toxins at a faster rate than they can be disposed of. The more toxic one's bodily systems are, the more severe the detoxification experience, or healing crisis. This reaction signifies that the bodywork received is working and that your client’s body is going through the process of cleaning itself of impurities, toxins and imbalances. While a healing crisis is temporary, it can occur immediately, within several days or several weeks after a bodywork session. Symptoms usually pass within several days, but can persist for several weeks. Often the crisis will come after a client feels their very best.

A healing crisis is a reaction to previously sequestered toxins being systemically released. Such poisons can be stored in all kinds of tissues, primarily muscle, fascia and adipose. During manipulation, the poisons are squeezed out of the holding body tissue into the bloodstream. This sudden increase in blood toxicity causes a toxicity reaction, until the body is able to effectively process and eliminate the poisons. While not a pleasant experience, a healing crisis signifies that a cleansing and purifying process is underway.

While cleansing can be physical, emotional or spiritual, a true healing crisis typically involves all three of these aspects. Due to the body’s fascinating ability to store memories and emotions in the tissues, their recollection or release can accompany the manipulation of those tissues. Most practitioners refer to the surfacing of memories or emotions without physical symptoms as an emotional release. An emotional release is a typical component of most healing crisis.
